FILMMAKERS TEAM UP FOR UNPRECEDENTED SHORT FILM IN CHARLOTTE
Bold vision comes alive with collaboration from Hollywood team & NC Film Community
Charlotte, NC - [July 25, 2024] - North Carolina’s independent filmmaking scene attracts homegrown talent back from Los Angeles as filmmakers, Lisa Cordileone and Shaan Dasani, unite to produce a groundbreaking 1950s suspense-filled drama. Set during the time period of the Lavender Scare, ‘Crazy As A Loon’ explores the persecution of American citizens who identify as LGBTQ+. The short film serves as a proof-of-concept for a television series in development. It is currently in post-production.
With filming taking place in Charlotte this past April, the movie is directed by Monica Raymund, known for her work on shows like North Carolina filmed Hightown, as well as The Good Wife and Chicago Fire.
"As a queer woman myself, it was important to me to learn more about this era and to explore the emotional fabric of what it means to be the target of a cruel policy, while trying to live authentically in the arms of a chosen community,” says Raymund.
The producers made this film with collaboration from the Charlotte Film Office, local businesses, the regional Chamber of Commerce, and a program with Film Partnership NC whose goal is to develop the local workforce.
“I learned the crew base is hungry to work on projects like ours: narrative storytelling that pushes boundaries. I’m excited to bring my experience as a producer back to my home state and engage with its emerging creative community,” shares Dasani.
Cordileone adds, “Leaving LA provided space to develop my artistic voice, gain perspective on the career I’m building, and inspire me to have a positive influence on the communities I represent. This is what social impact storytelling is all about. There is something special about mixing the ‘Hollywood’ with the ‘local.’”
Crazy As A Loon is Executive Produced by Shaan Dasani and Lisa Cordileone, Co-Executive Produced by Gregory Rae (Martian Entertainment) and Stephen Baker, and produced by Shaan Dasani and Morgan Marcell. The Stem Cycle, LLC and Karma Theory Films, both privately owned S-Corps, develop existing IP into narratives inspired by true stories/real events centered on tech ethics and climate justice.
